How many times have you heard your child say “Mom & Dad, I Want To QUIT?”
This can happen whether it is football, dancing, and yes, even Martial Arts.
As parents, we try to get our children into as many activities as possible. It is good for them to be involved in these activities, it teaches team spirit and helps them to relieve pent up energy.
In some sports your child will excel, but in others your child will flat out want to quit.
At Evolution Martial Arts and Fitness Academy, we always hear parents tell us that “my child tried this and that sport and always ended up quitting!”
Even in Martial Arts, when your child reaches a certain belt level, they may go through the same drama of wanting to quit.
Does This Sound Like You…
1. I don’t want to force them to do something they don’t want to do.
2. I don’t feel like arguing with them.
3. I remember when I was a kid and my parents made me stick with it.
Sometimes, the problem is not your child wanting to quit something.
It’s us as parents allowing or almost teaching them it’s OK to quit. I know we don’t do it on purpose. Sometimes it is easier to just give in to our kids when they are arguing or screaming and crying about quitting something or not getting their way.
When they are in that state there is no reasoning with them.
Sometimes talking to them and trying to reason with them about quitting doesn’t work. After all, they are your kids and how can you say no to them when they are giving you that helpless puppy dog look.
I’m sure it makes you feel terrible and it makes you want to give in.
But, you have to understand that your children know you better than you know yourself at times.
They are very smart and already know what buttons to push when it comes to getting what they want.
As kids, we did the same things, we were master manipulators too. At your child’s age they don’t understand what can happen when they learn to “QUIT” something. It can have a domino effect later on in their personal life.
For Example:
1. Among their friends, if they feel like they are losing a game, they simply give up.
2. The minute they feel challenged or have to do anything like hard work, they quit.
3. Statistics show that over 50% of students drop out of college in the U.K.
Kids don’t know the value of hard work.
They simply just want to be given and rewarded for their non-effort attitude.
It is all about take, take and take and not fight and earn for themselves.
How many times have we sat and watch something on TV about kids not putting in the hard work and end up blaming their parents for allowing them to be like that?
It is our job as Instructors and parents to teach them. We are here to help teach them the right life skills.
We know it can be hard at times but hang in there…
